What Powder Do I use?

Since starting my makeup group, The Beauty Diary, a few months ago I realized people use the wrong types of powders for the wrong thing. I have never really noticed it before but I also never really sat with other people to watch them do their own makeup, I was always the person doing makeup.

First lets go over the forms of powders

Loose powders usually comes in jars, they are loose not packed or pressed. They can be messy to apply and difficult to travel with. Loose powders can be colored, translucent, or transparent.

Pressed powders come in compacts, very easy to travel with. Because they have a little more ingredients in them to make them stick together the molecule size of them are a little larger and using too much can make you look cakey. You can get pressed translucent powders, pressed foundations and pressed HD powders.

Now lets go over the types of powders.

There are setting powders and finishing powders. Many companies use them interchangeably but they are not the same thing and should not be treated as such and lots of other companies label finishing powders exactly what they are.

Setting powders are used to set your foundation and or concealer, it stops the liquid or cream products from moving and it soaks up excessive oils. It can be colored or translucent. I am currently loving the Laura Mercier translucent powder which can be purchased at Sephora.

Finishing powders are used AFTER setting powders to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. If you set your makeup with a finishing powder you will look white and in flash photography you will look like a ghost and have lots of flashback. You do NOT set with a finishing powder. Popular finishing powders are NYX HD powders, MUFE HD powder, Girlatick finishing powder and Too Faced primed and pore-less finishing powder. Finishing powders are only good when using an HD camera, not direct flash photography (I'll go over at another time) and on film. Since we have HD TVs and can see the smallest flaws on the actors they have come up with HD makeup products. How you can tell if something is a finishing powder is by the ingredients it will either be 100% silica or the main ingredient will be silica.
